ShoreDog is a Washington
State non-profit organization that supports the creation of dog off-leash
areas within Shoreline.
In 2006
Shoreline residents passed a Parks Bond measure designating
$150,000 for the creation of an off-leash dog park system
and we are determined to see that it happens. We now
have two pilot sites and ShoreDog will be the stewards of these
off-leash areas. A
strong, active citizen group is essential to the success of
this project and we need your support!
We did it! Our 2 pilot sites have been
approved by City Council!

If you would like to have
off-leash areas in Shoreline, the best thing you can do is
become involved with ShoreDog:
ShoreDogBlog
[Sun 11.1] It was a beautiful day to enjoy
Shoreline’s second off-leash area. A portion of the beach at
Richmond Beach Saltwater Park is now open for off-leash use
until March 15th, 2010. Many of our fellow
off-leash fans were there today with their dogs, enjoying
the sun, sand and water. We are sharing this area with
people who are doing other things, so it’s vitally important
that we be good stewards of the area if we are to
successfully make it through the pilot period.
To that end, ShoreDog is looking for seven volunteers
to help steward the area. Each volunteer would commit to visiting
the Saltwater Park Off-Leash Area on a particular day each week. You
would be our eyes and ears, reporting basic information such as
cleanliness, damage, use patterns and behavioral issues. If you are
able, please contact us at
info@shoredog.org and let us know what you can do.
[Sat 8.15] We had a great time at Celebrate
Shoreline. Our first time walking in the parade and
the first year we could tell folks about our new off-leash
park at Shoreview and upcoming opening at Richmond Beach.
Thanks to all who participated including Mountlake Terrace
Dog Off-Leash Group and the fabulous Flying Furs who led our
group in style! Check out our
photo album of the event.

[Sat 8.9] Thanks to all who helped out at our Work
Party. We cleared out some blackberry bushes and did
general cleanup.

[Th 5.7] Renton Off-Leash needs support:
Working in close cooperation with the City of Renton, a
dedicated group of citizens has embarked on an ambitious
plan to build an off-leash dog park in Renton - this summer!
They've established a non-profit organization named RUFF, or
Renton's Unleashed Furry Friends. The park will be located
on a five acre, City-owned parcel adjacent to the Cedar
River Trail, site of the old NARCO brick plant. But before
construction can begin, they need to raise at least $20,000
from the community, a tall order in these tough times. If
you'd like to contribute funds, time, materials, or talents
to the cause, please visit their website at
www.rentonoffleash.org
[Sat 4.25] Shoreview Park Dedication and Unleashing -
we had a great turnout for the opening! Thanks to all
who attended the celebration including Shoreline Petco who
supplied us with doggie treats and frisbees. Here are some
pictures of the event.

[Mon 4.13] Update: The ordinance change remained on
the consent calendar and passed without remark on Monday
night, so the last hurdle has been crossed!
[Sun 3.28] Thanks to all of you who braved the rain
and cold to make our first ShoreDog work party a success.
With your continued dedication and hard work we're on the
right track to ensure the Shoreview pilot site becomes a
permanent fixture in our community. Pictures of the event
can be found
here!

[Sat 2.29] New officers were voted in: Kate Pineo was
elected Vice President of Development, Maggie Dean as
Volunteer Coordinator, Mina Williams as
Communication/Information Officer, and Sonya Reasor as
Assistant Secretary to Shari Tracey, who will be resigning
shortly to run for city council, at which time Sonya will
become Secretary. Shari will retain a post on the ShoreDog
Board of Directors. Below you can see a photo of the entire
board.

During the
meeting, other topics were discussed, including the new ShoreDog
logo (see below), proposed off-leash area rules, and future work
parties at the Shoreview site.

[Thurs 2.19]
A big THANK YOU to our new sponsor,
Worldink Internet
Services, a Shoreline-based Internet Service Provider.
Worldlink has donated web hosting services to ShoreDog
making this web site possible!

[Tues 01/27] Last night we received approval from the
City Council for the two pilot sites, one at Richmond Beach
Saltwater Park (the south side of the beach) and one at
Shoreview Park (also knows as "the pit" parking lot at
Shoreline Comm. College). It was nothing short of a miracle
that we had the votes to approve both sites. Here is a link
to the
Meeting Video.
Now is the time to make it happen and we're going to need
renewed energy and commitment from members of Shoredog! In
the next few weeks we'll begin working with the Parks Dept.
in the implementation of Shoreview opening in the spring,
and Saltwater opening in the fall (this will be a timed use
site open from approx. Nov. through April). Remember, these
are "pilot" sites for the first year so we need to show the
Parks Dept., City Council, and Shoreline residents that we
can succeed so that we can reach our long term goal of
creating a balanced system of neighborhood off-leash sites
throughout Shoreline. We'd love to see you at our next
Shoredog meeting:
Saturday, Jan 31st, 11am-12:30pm
Lake Forest Park Third Place Commons Meeting Room
17171 Bothell Way NE
Regarding the vote, the Shoreview site passed unanimously.
Councilmembers Cindy Ryu and Janet Way were most adamantly
against passing the Saltwater Park site and voted against
it. On the other hand, our biggest advocates were from
Councilmembers Doris McConnell, Keith McGlashan, and Ron
Hansen. In the end, Terry Scott and Chris Eggen also voted
in favor of Saltwater Park. Here is a link with their
bios/email addresses if you'd like to send them
comments or thanks.
Thanks again to everyone who has supported this process
through the last few years. It's been a long road, but we
are finally getting somewhere! I can't stress enough how
much we will need people to become involved in Shoredog now
that our dream has become a reality. Please join us and
spread the word!
